More Funding Needed For Drug Rehab and
Treatment
The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse,
out of Columbia University, just released a study that examines the amount of
money, or lack thereof, being spent on drug treatment and prevention.
The study found that substance abuse and addiction cost
federal, state and local governments at least $467.7 billion in 2005. Of those
monies, 374 billion dollars was spent on tobacco, alcohol, and substance abuse
consequences including health care costs, crime, domestic violence,
homelessness, child abuse and other consequences abuse and addiction, while
only two percent of the funds were used to relieve individuals and taxpayers of
these burdens through drug prevention and treatment.
Breaking it down, for every dollar spent, .96 cents went to
funding the burden of addiction and only .02 cents of every dollar was spent on
drug prevention and .02 cents of every dollar was spent on drug treatment.
Despite the serious lack of drug prevention and drug
treatment in the government's budget, there hope for addicts struggling with
drug and/or alcohol addiction through effective drug rehabilitation programs.
One such program that does help and achieves an unheard of 75% success rate for
permanent sobriety is the Narconon Louisiana drug and alcohol rehabilitation
program.
Narconon Louisiana is a long-term inpatient facility that
focuses on isolating the reason why addicts start using drugs in the first
place. "When you allow someone to handle their problems in life, you allow them
to live a life without drugs." Explains Jeff Lukas, Executive Director of
Narconon Louisiana.
Narconon Louisiana's unique method of detoxifying the body
of drug residues through a dry heat sauna is just one of the ways they help
addicts regain control of their lives. While Narconon Louisiana accepts a wide
variety of people into their program, it is not uncommon to see clients who
have first-hand experience with the negative consequences of addiction. "The
problems of stealing, violence, and neglect are late on the chain.," says Mr.
Lukas. "An addict has struggled for some time before they resort to that type
of behavior."
Even the Chairman of the National Center on Addiction and
Substance Abuse agrees that more needs to be done to prevent and treat drug
addiction and that using the majority of funding for the consequences of
addiction will not do anything to solve the drug problem. "It's time we
reevaluated our priorities," says Lukas. "I talk to people every-day that have
no idea that there is help out there and think that addiction can't be handled.
And we are backing up this false idea by putting monies into handling the
effects of addiction instead of the cause."
Effective drug treatment can permanently handle addiction.

Drug Treatment Vital for
Methamphetamine Addiction
Tom Lewis was someone that got hooked
on methamphetamine at an early age and unfortunately used meth for most of his
adolescent life. "I was completely consumed by it." he said in a recent
interview. "I went to several rehabs before I finally turned my life around."
Right now, methamphetamine use is on the rise and the number
of people needing drug treatment for addiction to this drug is shocking.
According to reports the number of 12 - 17 year olds admitted to treatment for
meth addiction more than doubled between 1994 and 2004.
And, although meth abuse is mostly concentrated in the
Midwest region of our country, the drug is slowly creeping into all areas of
the United States leaving behind devastation for anyone unfortunate enough to
fall victim to this drug.
Meth, speed, crank, crystal, ice, chalk, or zip are just a
few of the street names for methamphetamine, a drug made entirely from things
you can buy in your local convenience store. The drug, made up of things like
brake fluid, lye, pseudoephedrine, and drain cleaner is not only negative
affecting those addicted but their families as U.S. Child Welfare workers
removed more than 3,000 children from the labs during a one year period.
And as methamphetamine labs continue to run rampant
throughout our country those lucky enough to enter an effective treatment
program can live to explain its devastation in hopes to stop the abuse of this
drug.
Thankfully for Mr. Lewis, he was able to successfully
recover from meth addiction. In 2008, he enrolled in Narconon Louisiana, a drug
and alcohol rehabilitation facility. "I never thought that I wanted to live a
life without drugs. I was able to see that I could not only get clean, but I
could stay clean." Lewis believes that he was one of the lucky ones to escape
the grips of methamphetamine "It gets you. I had no concept of what it was
doing to my body, mind, or family. I was completely sucked into the meth
world."
Narconon Louisiana is a long-term inpatient facility located
just outside of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Unlike traditional rehabs, Narconon
Louisiana does not subscribe to the idea that addiction is a disease. Instead,
the program focuses on the underlying reasons why a person uses drugs in the
first place. Once those issues are isolated and handled, the individual no
longer feels the need to use drugs as solution to these issues.
In addition to handling the underlying issues centered on
drug abuse, Narconon Louisiana has a unique detoxification program that rids
the body of harmful residue left behind by drugs. As a result, there is a
dramatic decrease in physical drug cravings that so often lead to relapse and
are the downfall of sobriety.
If you or anyone you know is addicted to methamphetamine and
in need of a successful drug treatment program, contact Narconon Louisiana
today and we can help.

Celebrity Drug Use
Increasing?
Hollywood celebrities, often viewed as pictures of
perfection and role models to many, are succumbing to the evils of drug
addiction and as a result needing drug rehabilitation.
Professional athletes like Sammy Sosa join Alex Rodriguez
and Manny Ramirez and an increasing number of celebrity major league baseball
players using performance-enhancing drugs as found out in once incident when a
lawyer with possession of the test results recently released this
information.
And who can ignore the continue reporting on actress,
Lindsay Lohan, who is in the news for alleged drug use and "bad behavior" on an
almost daily basis. In addition, there is also the very popular television
show; Celebrity Rehab on VH1 that is a program that revolves only around
celebrities and their drug addiction problems as well as efforts to get drug
treatment.
Although this is unfortunate, drug use by celebrities is not
necessarily surprising. And, as more and more public figures are outed for
their drug use the focus turns to drug rehabilitation. One of the few positive
points is that if an addiction problem is uncovered and the individual goes
into the right type of drug treatment program and becomes rehabilitated, they
can once again be a positive role model whether they are a celebrity, opinion
leader, or not.
One such rehabilitation facility that has treated
individuals from all walks of life is the Narconon Louisiana drug and alcohol
rehabilitation program. Narconon Louisiana is an inpatient drug treatment
facility that achieves an unheard of 75% success rate for permanent recovery
from addiction. Jeff Lukas, Executive Director of Narconon Louisiana explains
what makes the program so successful, "Narconon Louisiana has the viewpoint
that people are not born as addicts," say Lukas. "At some point drugs were used
a solution to a problem and if we can get to the underlying reasons and the
original problem and isolate that and handled it, then drugs are no longer a
solution."
In addition to handling the mental and emotional components
of addiction, Narconon Louisiana also addresses the physical aspect.
Individuals that enroll on the Narconon program complete a detoxification
program that rids their bodies of harmful drug residues, therefore reducing the
physical drug cravings that often lead to relapse.
And while we may see more and more celebrities struggling
with substance abuse issues as well as individuals in everyday life, it is
vital to focus our efforts on drug rehabilitation and education. If you or
anyone you know is in need of help please contact the Riverbend Retreat
