James*, a former drug addict, knows exactly what it feels like when your life is spinning out of control. “A year ago I was at my worse. I had no control; every day was spent looking for my next shot of heroin and if I came across another type of drug I would use it immediately.” This type of out of control behavior is what led James to enroll in a drug rehab program called Narconon Louisiana. “It was there, during The Way to Happiness course, that I realized that doing things to excess was what led me down the road of addiction,” explains James, shortly after graduating. The Way To Happiness course is designed to show addicts that there is a set of morals that productive, drug-free members of society adhere to. This course is one of the last courses students enroll in before graduating the Narconon program.
Prior to entering the Narconon Louisiana program, James had been to several rehabilitation facilities trying to handle the heroin addiction that was killing him. “None of them worked. None of them allowed me to figure out what I was doing that led me down the path of addiction.” After James had detoxified his body in Narconon’s unique sauna detoxification program, and handled his past so that it no longer governed the way he acted and what kind of decisions he made, he was able to focus on acquiring a new foundation for life, a new way to make decisions and lead a productive life.
Being temperate or not doing things to excess and other such skills are found in The Way to Happiness course. This non-religious book, written by author and humanitarian, L. Ron Hubbard is a common-sense guide to life. A sort of rulebook that allows people to regain a sense of morals and a viewpoint that is based on ethical, pro-survival choices. This course is designed to re-introduce a person back into society. What often occurs with drug addicts is that they live in their own world and in the case of James; their lives revolve around the drug, and how to obtain it. When a person leads their life that way, they very quickly forget what is expected from them, they forget what is right and wrong and they forget that they were not always an addict.
Narconon Louisiana is a long-term, inpatient facility that maintains a 75% success rate for permanent recovery. Located just outside of Baton Rouge, the facility that sits on ten acres, does not subscribe to the idea that addiction is a disease, instead they work one on one with an individual to find out what problem drugs was a solution for. Once that problem is isolated and handled the individual no longer needs to resort to drugs and alcohol to get by in life. In a society where morals seems to be getting less and less important, it is vital that we take a moment and teach individuals what is expected of them, and how sober, productive members of society lead their lives. The Way To Happiness provides this lesson and is the final step to rehabilitation.
Being temperate is a moral that can very quickly be forgotten. Addiction is the exact opposite of that moral, and is what eventually leads people to enroll in a drug rehab like Narconon Louisiana.
